Yes the iPhone can be considered a 'fashion item' by some. But the thing is it does so much more than these clones, like a great user interface, Wi-Fi, EDGE, coverflow, album-art, YouTube, proper full internet(minus Flash and Java).
And to be honest every iPhone clone I've seen is junk. Usually a basic GSM MP3 playing cameraphone given an IMO horrible user interface, together with a warranty which isn't worth the paper it's written on.

I think you'll find that iPhone clones aren't all bad. If you look hard enough, you'll come across some that's BETTER than the original.
I have one, which is the best clone out. Here's a small list of features that the original doesn't have...

A FULL qwerty keypad
Bluetooth, Infrared and 3G
Windows Mobile firmware and Apple
Video Calling
So clones aren't that bad, you just have to find the best one, and there's over 20 different ones!
