Face it, a leaky old tub of a coal scow with a pom pom anti aircraft gun in the bow could SHRED a surfaced sub. No submarine EVER could take even minor damage to the presure hull and survive.
I am afraid that the same tripe is appearing in the comments despite your request.
What is really pathetic is when the comments under a video for women's volleyball degenerates into racial and political diatribe.
Thanks for the comment, and the refreshing turn away from mudslinging.
I hope I haven't offend you; I'm glad you put this clip up. There's only two things I'm sure of: 1) All sailors are brothers, regardless of their uniforms. This is something soldiers will NEVER understand -- sailors have a common enemy, and that's nature. Many battles at sea have been interrupted by heavy storms, fiercer by far than any gunfire.
2)subs were never, and WILL NEVER be able to fight by the same rules as surface ships. It's folly to think they could.
Am I wrong?
If I'd been on a PEACETIME cruise on a U-Boat, nothing could have gotten me aboard for a second one. Chow I wouldn't feed to my dog, standing watch awash in a moderate gale, having only a change of socks to call my own? Yuck.
But that scene is probably one of my favorites. It is rather moving, for want of a better phrase.
If you have any knowledge of what happened in WW1, right at the outset of that war subs were expected to play by "cruiser rules".
This is what was supposed to happen to a ship intercepted by a sub: the sub would have to surface, fire a shot across the bows of the ship, and order it to stop.
Then there was the little fact that cruiser rules pertained to unarmed ships not in convoy. Convoying ships removed the protection they might have got. And also the British created "Q ships" - alleged unarmed
( Yawns)
If he had been the LI in the engine room, nobody would have dared make a comment to him.
LI means "Leitender Ingenieur". That´s the rank of the chief-machinist. Johann has a rank below the LI. The LI is the technical chief of the whole submarine. The LI is Nr.1 in the engine matters and Johann ranks below the LI as Nr.2 in the engine room.
And yes: The man in this video who replies "blöde Sau" is the LI. The man with the ruined nerves, who´s allways thinking about his wife back home.
