East Timor, May 2002 -- Raising the flag and national anthem
Uploaded by: thecommunitycom
Video Description:
Segment of the ceremonies for East Timor's celebration of independence in May, 2002, as the country becomes a democracy. At midnight, the Timorese flag is raised, to the national anthem, for the first time on the new nation.
The ceremony was introduced by Xanana Gusmao, the resistance leader who was imprisoned in Indonesia for seven years. He had just been sworn in as East Timor's first democratically elected President. Today, in 2008, he is the country's Prime Minister.
If you are not familiar with the country's history, and you can make an hour in your schedule for it, we recommend watching Death of a Nation by David Munro -- available on YouTube -- to get a sense of what the Timorese people had gone through to reach this day.
