This is really a song better suited for a vocal group, which is why many people prefer the Vogues' version. It would have been better if she'd used some backup singers. Still, no one could sing it as a solo better than her.

I believe it. The problem is, you can't hear a lot of the song for the screaming. That's probably why they don't do it anymore. Either that or they make the singers and musicians so loud, they drown out the screamers.

I've done some research so I'm answering myself. She wrote and released the song in 1965. It was #23 in the UK. The Vogues' version was released the same year and was #4 in the US. That means all those sexy dancers and most of those screaming girls in the audience are old enough to be grandmothers. Oh Lord, I'm getting so old!

British hit but before Warner Brothers could release it in the U.S. the Vogues covered it. That happened to Pet a lot. "Call Me" originated on the "I Know A Place" album but was covered by Chris Montez before she could get her single out. And her great "Now That You're Gone" got covered by Connie Stevens So many great album tracks competing to become singles.

I love Petula Clark but I must confess that I prefer The Vogues' version of this song because their voices sound more upbeat than hers. In this video it seems like she's doing an obligatory performance after breaking up with the person she wrote the song for. It doesn't have the happiness that she displays in Downtown or My Love.
