Joni said the inspiration for this song came from a mobile made of scrap colored glass that she hung in her window on West 16th Street in New York's Chelsea district. The sun would hit the mobile and send moving colors all around the room. There's a reference to it in the second verse of the song.
Chelsea is also the name of an area of south-west London, England, which was once known as a bohemian neighborhood where many artists, writers and poets lived.

Nice video. Perfect choice of images to go with the song. I suppose "Chelsea Morning" makes a lot of people think of Impressionist and Fauvist paintings. And I thought it was just me!

Actually Joni found the colored glass and made the mobile while she was playing a gig in Philadelphia. She said in a 1996 interview that she didn't consider "Chelsea Morning" one of her better songs. "I think it's a very sweet song, but I don't think of it as part of my best work. To me, most of those early songs seem like the work of an ingenue."
