Stewart was my favourite actor, but in fairness, Claude Rains was also a brilliant actor criminally underused by Hollywood, so he was left to "character" roles, like Louis in Casablanca, in which he almost steals scenes from Bogart and Bergman.

Jeff Smith is the idealized hero played by a true American hero, Jimmy Stewart. Look up Stewart's WW2 record some time. He is the real article. This speech (and the whole movie) are so good because in the final analysis, corny as it may sound today, Jimmy Stewart really WAS Jefferson Smith.

Jimmy Stewart should have won an Oscar for Mr. Smith. He was great.

I wouldn't say that he was underused. He was in practically every Warner Brothers movie of the era. But he and Edward G. Robinson never really got the recognition they deserved.

Fair comment, but I do think Edward G Robinson got recognition. Far more people remember him than Claude Rains

Sorry, I don't understand that remark. You and I are in agreement about Claude Rains. Why the "short memory" comment?
In comparison, I was astonished to speak to some twentysomethings who hadn't heard of James Stewart, but knew John Wayne.

I didn't mean to sound snarky. But I don't think Claude Rains is forgotten. Then again, maybe it's just me. He blended so well into each role that I suppose he might not jump out at a younger person today, despite his constant presence.

I know that the only person I can discuss Claude Rains (other than perhaps your good self!), is my Dad. I know I'd get blank stares from anyone else of my acquaintance.
Do you know a few other people, other than film buffs, who know Claude Rains?

Claude Rains is appreciated by those of us who love old films, but I doubt if one person in ten under the age of 60 would know his name. (I doubt if they'd know Al Jolson's name, either. Or Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's.) Anyway, we're looking at one of the most electrifying scenes in screen history: idealism on the ropes, almost down for the count. It's as if all of civilization hangs in the balance. Stewart was unsurpassed here... and to think he also excelled at comedies and westerns!

I know Claude Rains' name! He's amazing in Casablanca.
This is such a great movie. I love Jimmy Stewart in this! This movie represents everything our country should be. We need senators like Mr. Smith and values like the ones potrayed here. It seems as though the values of America are being lost as we travel on through time.

I love Claude Rains in "Lawrence of Arabia", very good as the oily diplomat. He was great in just about everything he did.

This movie is so fantastic! If Americans would love America half as much as Jimmy does in this movie the world would be a better place! I put an American flag up over my bed because of this movie! This is THE movie about patriatism and every American should watch it! If you don't love America after this movie then you should just leave cause it's a tear jerker and I'm DAMN proud to be an American!
