Eric Clapton may play better than Hooker, but he has stood on his shoulders and those of Wille Johnson, Lemon Jefferson and many others. Clapton won't "admit" that - he'll claim it.

Why is delta blues so significant cause they're telling a story that very many few can bring to life on a guitar. Any one can be great with guitar but if you cant tell a story and show your soul you're not right to play the blues. Too bad this man is gone he was a great.

jlh, muddy waters, robert johnson are all great blues players. bb and buddy guy are great, but the ones mentioned above just have an essence to them. maybe im more of a delta blues fan than rhythym and blues.

Hooker's actually not an uncommon last name. The term "hooker" (meaning prostitute) was popularized by a Union general from the Civil War who was named Joseph Hooker who was known for his womanizing ways.

Hooker actually means someone who uses a hook for a living- (dock or meat worker,etc.) - the meaning relating to prostitution is corrupt and a "slang" meaning, and only came into use in the 20th century.
John Lee Hooker also had to record under other names to prevent him being recognised by white supremists when he became popular.
This is perhaps the earliest professional recording that I have ever seen of him- and a great performance/ song.

The different names were used because of his record contract. Since they didnt pay black artist hardly anything back in the day, he used the different names to go to different studios to record.
